The BYU Copyright Licensing Office announces the creation of the Music Copyright Listserve for Universities (“MCLU”) - a new listserve dedicated to addressing the unique complexities of music copyright within universities and other nonprofit, educational organizations.
Copyright law can already be a daunting challenge to understand and apply, especially within the nonprofit, educational sphere. Music copyright as a subset of that law involves even more complexity. The mission of the MCLU is to provide a useful resource to help employees at nonprofit, educational institutions make better, more informed copyright decisions about the use of music within their institutions.
Unique aspects of the MCLU:
- Public and open membership to all eligible applicants
- Anonymous question submission options
- Anonymous response options
- Only known listserve in the country specifically dedicated to music copyright issues for nonprofit, educational institutions
“We hope this listserve will fill a current gap in resources available to the librarian or other administrator who is confronted with difficult music copyright questions in their job duties and often don’t have much experience in the world of music and copyright,” Ty Turley Trejo, Assistant Director of Licensing at BYU and founder of the MCLU says. “Copyright law can be daunting, and listserves can be extremely valuable in offering hive mind approaches to issues, as well as specific use-cases that apply to all.”
