Public Domain Music

Use Public Domain Music If Possible

It is recommended that you use public domain music whenever possible. Public domain music is not protected by copyright and is therefore free for all to use without requiring permission. In the United States, the public domain includes:

  • works published before 1925;
  • works published before 1978 without copyright registrations or certain other formalities; and
  • United States government works.

For assistance in determining whether a specific musical work is in the public domain, contact the BYU Copyright Licensing Office
